New Plan...

We saw the neurologist on Wednesday. He spent an hour with us--good man! We made a couple new plans. FIRST...we are weaning Reese off of the Phenobarbital! It is a very slow process that will probably take a month, but it is already in effect! I'm so excited and can't wait to see the difference in her when it is out of her system. Next, we are starting the Ketogenic Diet in the beginning of August. We have to wait til then because the PCH Dietician is out of town. She told Doc that she is not comfortable with us starting when we cannot talk to her. They watch it very closely. Basically, the diet is 4 parts fats, 1 part carb, 1 part protein. I have to weigh out food very precisely and follow it to the letter. It makes the blood acidic, which creates ketones in the blood and urine, which do something good for the brain of an epileptic. I am very excited to see what happens. From what I have read, 1/3 of epilepsy patients on the diet get complete seizure control and on half of the rest have decreased seizures and more alertness. Please pray that Reese has those results too!
Dr. Buchhalter said we are the perfect family to do the diet because we are smart! Ha ha...that made my day--our neurologist thinks we are smart!!!:)

  1. Hi, there -

We've had pretty good success with the diet with Evelyn (14 mos, w/Aicardi Syndrome). I mean, it didn't completely wipe out her seizures, but was really the first big marked improvement we saw. Still on it, along w/Keppra. We actually started the diet out in Phoenix @ PCH (we had Dr. Bernes), but have since moved back to Atlanta, GA to be closer to family.

    Lots of luck & prayers!

    Daniel
