Reese's Baptism

Reese was baptized at Scottsdale Bible Church on August 18, 2013. I have had a few people ask for a copy of the piece that we wrote, and which Lucas read before baptizing her. Here it is: "This is Reese D’Ortenzio and we are her parents, speaking for her today on the day of her baptism. Reese was born in 2007 with Aicardi Syndrome and labeled “Severely and Profoundly Disabled”. This means that we not only care for all of her physical needs, but we are her voice where there are no words. We have known deep in our souls for several years that Reese has a very special connection with God. We believe she knows Him well and loves Him and feels His presence, possibly even in ways that we cannot. Over the last few months God has prompted both of us, separately in prayer, to have Reese baptized because it would be her choice if she could speak. We are here for Reese in response to God’s prompting. And we are encouraged by 1 Samuel 16:7 where God reminded Samuel, “The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” Although we need to help Reese with almost everything, there are a few things with which she needs no help at all. In fact, she’s been a great teacher in our home. Those things are: love…joy…peace…patience…gentleness…goodness…and self-control. In the things that are very important to God, Reese needs no assistance. She exhibits a peace about her that far surpasses our understanding. She has real joy in the midst of trials. She gives love freely to anyone and everyone, and to us she just IS love. She is patient beyond explanation. She is gentle, good, and self-controlled. Because God has given us the responsibility to speak for Reese, we will be her voice today. We believe she would want you to know that God is her refuge and her strength. Her peace and joy come from Him. We bet she would tell you about all that He has done for her, and about all that she has seen in the Heavenly realm. And we are confident she would point you to the Son of God, her Friend, Jesus Christ."
